Her whole speech could have been, “Hi. I’m Sarah Palin. I could stand up here for several minutes and say a lot of things that aren’t even remotely true about my record, my ethics, and my experience and talk a lot of trash about Barack Obama, even if what I have to say about him isn’t true either. I don’t need to say any of that though, because I love guns, I love sports, and I sure as shootin’ love me some Jesus, and I know you’ll vote for that, regardless of the fact that I have nothing else to offer you. McCain/Palin ‘08!” Seriously. It would have been much more succinct and just as effective.

Handles herself with grace and dignity in the face of criticism on how she balances her career with raising her family? You go girl! Don’t take their shit!

Pro-life. Wait… pro-life? Who does this woman think she is? ATTACK!!!!!!

I agree on some of these that Sarah Palin deserves respect. For being a working mother, for giving her daughters a good example of a strong woman, I do give her a great deal of respect. As the daughter of the same kind of woman, I don’t think I could do anything else.

Beyond that, though, there are some serious holes in this argument. The first, I’m just going to knock “didn’t sleep her way to the top” off this list. Are you suggesting that Hillary Clinton or any number of other female politicians have? That’s patently insulting, not to mention utterly unfounded, and if you think that way about any of the female leaders we have today, I have to say that stands only to show how warped your mind is, not anyone else’s.

The whole argument about Palin leading a one-woman crusade against corrupt Alaskan leadership has been grossly exaggerated. The previous Republican leadership was so corrupt, that a DEMOCRAT was the heir apparent to the Alaskan throne, despite Alaska being staunchly Republican. When Palin stepped in as an alternative, she was very welcome by every Republican in the state. It wasn’t much of a crusade. While I give her points for being a whistle blower and for having ethics that are far and away an improvement over those of the previous leadership, that hasn’t stopped her from getting embroiled in abuse-of-power scandals of her own. I just don’t buy the argument that she’s some anti-establishment Republican progressive. She’s not.

As far as Palin’s pro-life stance goes, I think women and men alike are allowed to attack candidates for political office for ANY of the political positions they hold, including their positions on abortion. Considering that those opinions could be legislated so that they affect the lives of every American, and especially American women, where she stands on abortion should absolutely be an issue to everyone. I, personally, am pro-choice and will continue to vote for pro-choice candidates, because I see them as protecting my reproductive rights. Moreover, I will continue to criticize pro-life candidates for their positions.

That’s not my only criticism of Palin of course. I disagree with her positions on drilling, the environment, and gun control. The fact that she is a woman matters relatively little to me, because I disagree with almost all of her politics. That doesn’t mean I can’t give her the respect she deserves for her accomplishments. However, I do not feel that means she deserves my silence or my compliance with her policies and beliefs simply because we have similar genitalia.

If you want to criticize feminists, go ahead. But I want to point out that you are the one who is making her gender more important than her beliefs or her qualifications, not me. And isn’t that what true feminism is? The desire for women to be considered equal, regardless of their sex? I have problems with anyone — male or female — with her resume taking the second highest leadership position in our country. Her vagina really isn’t an issue for me.
