ash la amo y la odio
Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.
Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool’s gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.
Temptation’s page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you’d just be
One more person crying.
So don’t fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing.
As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don’t hate nothing at all
Except hatred.
Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.
While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.
An’ though the rules of the road have been lodged
It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge
And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it.
Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you’re the one
That can do what’s never been done
That can win what’s never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.
You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.
A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.
Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.
For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.
While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him.
While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society’s pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he’s in.
But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him.
Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn’t talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.
While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer’s pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death’s honesty
Won’t fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.
My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me?
And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine
But it’s alright, Ma, it’s life, and life only.

I am not trying to bring this up again. I just thought this person made some valid points.
Okay, sorry to have to re-reblog on this topic, but this is not the first time today I have heard someone refer to the expectation that as a black president, Barack Obama will do something that no president before him has done in the way of improving our status (I am Black) in this country. I personally think that this manner of thinking is racist.
Have we been electing white men all these years with the expectation that they will improve the condition of other white men in this country (whether or not they have actually done so in their policies is a different question - what I’m addressing here is expectation)?
To think that anyone will do anything because they are of a certain race is racist. Politicians are to serve the needs of a society and a diverse society has diverse needs. Obama is no more obligated to promote the fair and equal treatment of Blacks as Bush was/is. To expect him to is trivialize both his capabilities as a person and the resonance of his potential presidency.
I agree with foodinmouth for the most part.
I am very pleased that Obama got the nomination. But, and maybe because I am speaking as an African American, I do not believe that this nomination or even a possible presidency is going to totally change things at least not quickly. A black president shouldn’t finally be the end to racism. In fact, it’s a little sad if it is. African Americans have been free and had rights and have contributed to this country for sometime now and if a black president needs to finally and officially make things better for blacks or any other person of color for that matter I think it’s a unfortunate.
But, I do have hope and I do believe that things will change and are changing. The future does seem a litte brighter.
Obama compromised on FISA, and it made me mad.
Obama was equivocal on guns, and it made me mad.
Obama criticized the Supreme Court ruling on the Death Penalty, and it made me mad.
After all of these things, I began to wonder why I had supported Obama during the primary.
Then I read [John Clark’s post above], and I started to remember.
What I liked about Obama was his conviction that, despite the different attitudes and beliefs between the “red” states and the “blue” states, we are at essence more alike than we are different.
The partisanship model of politics has been in full force in this country for at least the past 30 years. Democrats and Republicans stress their differences in an attempt to stand apart from their opponents. Democrats are “in favor” of abortion rights, affirmative action, redistributing wealth through taxation, etc. Republicans are “opposed” to these very same issues. So, (says the partisanship model), politics is a jockeying of power to see who can win the policy war and implement their policies over the opposition of their opponents.
But over the past decade, growing numbers of people have been rejecting this paradigm, perceiving that the “defining” policies of Democrats and Republicans should really be considered as fringe issues. The fact is, there are issues that the entire population can get behind: Growing the economy, increasing the standard of living, improving education and access to health care, etc. If our government spent half as much energy on these issues as it does on the fringe issues, we could accomplish a lot as a nation.
So I had forgotten the principal lesson of Obama’s message: Don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees. Don’t get hung up on the fringe issues. Keep your eyes on the prize. If one side gains an inch, or loses an inch, on the abortion issue, but we all gain a mile on education, the entire nation wins.
Viewed in this light, Obama’s actions these past few weeks seem sensible and noble. What really matters to you: telecom immunity, or increased health, happiness and prosperity for everyone. Knowing that in the world of politics there is a finite amount of time and a finite amount of energy, which is the fight to fight?
If your answer to that question is telecom immunity, then you are still locked in the thralls of a partisan mindset.
I have always been very intrigued by the portrayal of St. Sebastian. Since before I knew who he was. I don’t know if it is because they are usually attractive or the vulnerability catches one off guard. I enjoy his story. I was trying to find this “seven virtues” series I saw in the ufizzi but so far have failed, and came across a Botecelli catalogue.
I wish I could walk through there again, and go at night and sit on the steps. I have been gone for a year. I miss the statue of St.George. I miss the bells. I miss the quietness of night, my bakery, the morning cafe, the smooth stone steps of the apartment, and the accordion player mid afternoon. The gardens that sloped down from the hill, the ruins, the alleys, the dream frenzy night, the wine. It is really beyond a city and then the romance/enchantment is masked in tourism at times. The statue of David was across from my grocery store. I lived on the same street. I miss the great feeling of everything being so much older and larger, and then the immediacy that is italian passion and sense. It was such a balance and experience.
